Wondering if anyone knows the answer to this.

I'm out of mobile phone range, yet have wifi coverage, can I have skype installed on my mobile phone and recieve calls to my mobile number via skype when I'm within range of my wifi?

And if that does work, does it cost extra for those calling me? :?

Skype did have a calling from landline service. It was just a regular phone call for those who are calling.

It was pretty easy to set up.

There are easier ways these days though.

Tease. :-P

So is it possible to have people call me on my mobile if I'm out off phone range yet have a WiFi connection somehow?

Have a play with Viber.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... voip&hl=en

It should do what you want. Free too. Well I think they charge you to call a non viber phone, but it should still work.

If you are out of phone cell range you will not get any phone data either so Skype will not work. Now the exception is if you have Wifi available on your phone then you can Skype over that with or without phone cell coverage.

As long as your phone has a Wi-Fi signal Skype will work on it. Now if your friends or family want to call you for free they can call your Skype account from either another computer, or their phone if they have Skype also.

Yes (last I checked a year or 3 ago) you can get a Skype number that will make it appear just like a regular mobile call, apart from the unusual number.
I don't think it was too expensive either. You can also have Skype calls forwarded to your mobile.

If your phone and provider have WiFi Calling you can turn that on as well, then you can call/text over the WiFi signal. T-Mobile has it here in the states don't know about other areas.

Besides Skype you can use a free app called Pinger, they will give you a 2nd number free that works over WiFi for phone and text.

My wife just went to England. Didn't bother with getting a new sim. Took her Australian Sim out just incase she got pinged for roaming, and used skype thru hotels free wifi.

Brilliant!

I don't think you can just redirect your existing mobile number through skype (so external people ringing it will pop up no skype), though you can get a skype number with your accoount... and leave a voicemail message on your mobile saying to call that number... or redirect to it if you have that capability.

You know, I've found that after a few months now it's quite peaceful without phone reception.. Most people I know are now used to it and leave a message or send an email, I go into phone range every day at some stage so can easily return calls, and every now and then friends get a surprise "Oh I got through"... Kind of nice in a way to not be a slave to the phone. :)

I have used google voice a few times. If you have internet but no cellular coverage you can have your voicemails shown visually on the web. It also gives you a number for others to call into and leave messages so you don't need to give out your personal number. Last time I used it was in 2012 so not sure how much has changed.
