Wooo hooo...

Ichsani, my favourite soil scientist in the whole world, and member here at BYAP, talking about soil health and carbon cycling.

Just watched this one, really enjoyed the talk and Ichsani's studies. I love the statement that "nature thinks in cycles", which is exactly what AP is about. Food in - waste out - nature returns as food - etc etc..

Makes you look at dirt a whole different way, did for me anyways.

Are TED talks funded in some way?

Are guest speakers paid for their talks?

This just happens to be being asked at this time and has nothing to do with Ichsani's totally interesting talk by the way.

I'm not sure how this could be misconstrued, but I thought I should drop in the disclaimer just in case :)

My understanding is that it is a status thing for presenters. Their presentations are selected through a review process. I don't think they get direct payment. Could be wrong.

I don't think they are paid. I think they audition to speak, so I guess they are just subject to the preferences of the TED judges..

Are there particularly controversial topics ever covered by TED speakers ? (I haven't seen that many)

I have heard of TED talks not being put on the website for being too controversial...

TED talks must appear to be somewhat spontaneous when in actual fact the speeches are reheared and reheared and rehearsed. I think TED even has public speaking and acting coaches to prepare speakers. They have a little display showing the time downstage and must keep the talk down to 18 mins or even less though some go over a bit. Speakers are not paid but their travel and accomodation expenses are covered. People are chosen through scouting and by nomination.

TED has many sponsors and is a nonprofit.
