One thing that i found funny in linux was i could run a virtual machine with windows and it would run faster that an actual full blown windows machine. Same number of cpu's and ram.

There is GCC for Windows, but I really want to try to keep all of this native to Linux.
It's trying my patience at the moment though, took over an hour to get Google Chrome to work.

I tried it the other way round yesterday, running Linux in a VM in Windows.
I think that is possibly the way forward, that way you can do all the Dev in Windows and run the toolchain to compile/link etc. in a VM.
Actually that is exactly what the guy in the tutorial I found on youtube is doing.

I'll persevere with standalone Ubuntu for now as I have time on my hands, but it really is a struggle.

Ah chromium is different (from what I gather) that's the open source version (apparently)
I am like a baby learning to walk at the moment.
Without an internet connection to troubleshoot, I'd have given up before I started.

Once I got the compiler in the right place and set the environment up, the test project compiled without a hitch.
That's usually the difficult bit.
All the troubles I have had are with the OS itself.

That Chrome problem is a good example.
Unless you were a total guru, there's no way to fix that.

I'm deeply unimpressed so far, but I always like to find a silver lining.
At least there is a mainstream OS that is worse than MAC OS :D

Be careful saying things like that... Angry linux mobs might chase you down :shifty: :D

You were able to fix it with a simple google though. So you fixed it without being a guru. I havnt found a problem yet that google couldnt solve.

So far everything that's native linux has run either through copying and pasting 4 or 5 lines of googled tips into terminal, or straight out of one of the package installers without having to do anything.

It's a shame you're having such a hard time of it. Hopefully it will be the only thing that gives you a hard time.

Well, possibly, however I just found out that Visual Studio has a plugin for Win CE 6.0.
I won't give up on Linux just yet, it's gonna be a couple of weeks before I can order the board anyway.
I have to say that the thought of being able to develop in VB.Net for an embedded device is very exciting (yeah I should get out more....)
VB6.0 and then VB.Net absolutely transformed Windows App development.
We'll see.

Oh I did.
Try compiling the toolchain for FriendlyARM under Linux.
Actually don't, you'll lose the will to live, or at least the will to buy the Dev Board.
I gave up after nearly 2 weeks and have ordered a high end PIC with native USB support.
No dinky little touchscreen, but can plug it straight into a laptop running silky Windows and develop the app in VB.
Last time I ever play with Linux.
