There are stil a few places available for the next workshop which is on the 28th July 2012. Kicking off at 3.30pm we start with an introduction and overall history followed by the basics of happy fish and plants, how to manage bugs and we also include afternoon tea, but wait there is more, you also get to take home a presentation folder with course notes, the latest printed magazine and the first five editions on a dvd as well.

For only $55-00 you can learn all that you need to know to get started and you will also have the opportunity to ask questions, we rarely get questions that we haven't heard before as we are in our fourth year of running workshops, my how times flies when you're having fun.

We are not completely full, there are just under 10 for todays workshop which is a great number. If there are more than ten we would generally split the group in two so that people get to see and hear eveything. Refreshements purchased -thanks Joel, workshop packs made, sun shining, fish swimming - what more could one ask for?
Well today I realised just what last winter was like, I remembered back to the flooded carpark the thunderstorms and the threat of rain and from memory it was 3 winter workshops in a row. This year has been quite the opposite clear skies and sunshine, and this month more evaporation than rainfall making aquaponics a wise choice even for Perths winter.

Another of our winter workshops was held yesterday and the sun was shining yet again with temps in the low 20s. We had thirteen people in attendance half of which already have a system set up and running, and the others are just about to get started. Here are a few pics, veges are looking great and loving the warm days that we are having.



About half way we take a coffe break and top up on a few light refresehments.

Workshops are still fairly well attended although the footy season does have a bearing on numbers as finals fever is high at this time of year. 7 people attended the latest workshop which make for an intimate gathering.
Trout in the system make for an entertaining fish feeding session and winter growth does well, despite the system receiving minimal sunlight under the heavy shadecloth. Nasturtiums are going crazy and are a great companion plant and very colourful with edible leaves, flowers and seeds that double up as caper berry substitutes, providing a peppery flavour.



The tree fern shows that it doesn't have to be just edible plants. This fern was planted around four years ago and the bed has received minimal maintenance, no replanting, no weeding. All we do is remove the old fronds and the other ferns look after themselves. The palms are headed for the shadecloth roof, so it wil be interesting to see how high it can go.
Planting demo at the solar trial system and seeds planted during the last workshop are taking off. These are nasturtiums and beans, the goldfish are eating well and the system has cleared after the initial greening cycle.
Afternoon tea time always gets a shot, this time we had the popular cornflake biscuits, french onion dip and cakes.
The next workshop will be help on the 27th October and possibly the last one for the year, cause I will be having a relaxing holiday

Is the Nasturtiums in the 3rd photo down on the right hand side? I have some of that just appear in my garden. Wanted to check before i went and started eating a random plant.

Yes Ryan, it is the one with the orange flowers. They also come in a range of other colours like yellows and others have variegated leaves.

It was a warm Saturday afternoon, we had the outdoor misters on and the indoor air conditioners. What perfect conditions for starting the workshop in the alfresco area under the lilly pilly tree. Here are a few pics of the weekend workshop.


After sitting and listening to some of the basics it was time to ake a fish tour. What better way to familiarise oneself with fish than to observe them taking food. The silver perch in this 1000 litre fish tank are growing quite large and have achieved pet status after being rehomed.





The Balcony systems have just two fish each, one has catfish and the other black bream. Both fish will live in fresh water and though they do survive year round are found to be very slow growing.

The Family system is home to some lush floating water plants and show how you can utilise the water surface to grow and contain some of the voracious water plants and herbs.


Todays planting dmonstration included a display of a ritual for many at around 5 oclock cracking open a beer, no, I didn't drink any. I showed how we used the stand pipe cap to make a beer trap. It got their attention, I can tell you.

We have a vistitors book here and these are just a couple of the comments from todays workshop.

Well as if Gerladton wasn't a long way away, we also had John here from Germany, pictured looking at the Balcony systems. John has been helping out in the background for the last few weeks.

Workshops resumed again today after the temps dropped having recorded Perths longest hottest Summer in 100 years. I will let the photos do the talking

It was good to see some forum members at todays workshop and possibly a couple still to make their appearance. A great bunch of enthusiastic aquaponics people and i'm sure we will be seeing more of them. Hello Slowboat and Simons Brady bunch




Can you tell who might have taken the photo of the Blue Barrels, mmm I wonder if that was Nat. We know he just loves blue barrels. With a new delivery Nat probably wont sleep tonight, dreaming about what to do next
