Hi all,
I'm a lecturer in aquaculture at Challenger Tafe in Fremantle. Here we have one of the largest hatcherys in Australia. I currently have 25 Certificate III of Aquaculutr students.As part of the course our students are currently growing Barramundi and Black Bream from eggs. We have about 150,000 barramundi as three week old larvae and about 80,000 Black Bream. Although these are initially in salt water when the fish are old enough we will convert some of them to fresh water and they will be available for aquaponics enthusiasts at the end of the winter. We will be growing the barramundi in recirculation systems throughout the winter so we can keep the water temperature at about 28 C.
Last year we supplied about 5000 Black Bream to aquaponics enthusiasts but the overall demand was so great that I have decided to make available more fish this year. the fish won't be ready until September.
We have also helped Kelmscott High School set up an aquaponics unit and they currently have barramundi in a 2,500 litre tank.

Yes we can KudaPucat and last year my students and i sent 200 large Black Bream (250 grams) to Queenscliffe in Victoria where they were carrying out research on this species. However interstate shipping is difficult because each state has their own translocation permits and veterinary clearances. You have to have these before we can ship. As to how much we usually sell the fingerlings for a $1.00 each plus cost of transport. Our students do the packing a spart of their course so the overall cost is lower.

Hi Mary no we don't have trout. Pemberton trout hatchery are the place for these. We are a hatchery for marine finfish such as Snapper, Yellowtail Kingfish, Black Bream and Barramundi. The last two species can be converted over to fresh water and so they are useful for aquaponics.

Hi Tony, Colin from Kalgoorlie here.

I lost about 1/2 the Bream in the first week in Kal, due to them eating each other. Once I upped the feed they have been great since.

They are very effective at cleaning the tank of anything edible, I am not sure of the growth yet, because they are all mixed in with the Silvers.

I'll grab another 200 or so in Octoberish

ick, that sounds a bit complex, I have NFI even where to start with those regs.

I do know the research facility in Queenscliffe, I have visited there numerous times.

Hi,

further to my original post as I'm in the hatchery every weekend I will take a small group (no more than 15 people) through our facilities on Sunday 15th March at 10 a.m.
The hatchery is one of the largest in Australia and we have Pink Snapper, Mulloway, Yellowtail Kingfish, Barramundi and Black Bream currently under culture. The last two species are the ones we offer to the aquaponics enthusiasts as these species can be cultivated in fresh water. The tour will take about an hour so if you want to participate please leave a message on my personal message board and i will get back to you.

And if you are near Perth, I can recommend any tour, its a great place
