I'd be contacting Consumer Protection to get all the details of "implied warranties", then contacting the company again.

Good luck mate.
I am a fan of ebay and the ease at which you can buy stuff. However there is always the risk of something going wrong and the seller not supporting the product.
I guess that risk exists with conventional stores as well. The main probles is probably where the cost of shipping is significant with respect to the cost of the item.
The great thing about ebay is the feedback system, however it does not allow for long life products that may fail in 6 months after your purchase (and after you have given good feedback)
Having said that I have had very good success with refunds for faulty goods, even from foreign sellers..

hmmm, why doesn't BYAP have an ebay store ?

If anyone is interested there are a couple of companies selling Mebner discontinued pumps at very good prices. These are German made pumps and they have reduced the warranty from 2 years to 3 months. Just google Mebner pumps, pages from Australia.
I assume the discontinued is because the company is now are now selling under the Messner brand name and they have developed more efficient pumps.
If they have retained the quality these are very reliable, mine went for from memory for 18 years. :)

Probably because they are busy enough and can't see the sense in spending even more hours to make very, very little... competing against Hong Kong based drop shippers, or even Aussie's operating out of their garage, with little, or no overheads, selling cheap Chinese crap and offering no after sales service... like you said:

...and more importantly, maybe Joel, Faye and their crew prefer to deal with customers on a more personal level... while offering advice, encouragement and support... and maybe a coffee!

Yeah, fair enough.
It could be useful for BYAP specific stuff. I was just thinking about when I bought a ph meter, I just went to ebay and got one. If BYAP had an ebay store I would have gone there and got it that way. I am an impatient shopper, I wan't to spend the least time possible, especially if I know what I want. Thats why I like paypal, it just makes everything so easy and fast.

JEBO makes some of the worst quality products in the industry (aquarium). That ebay pumped mentioned is a copy of a Laguna/Hagan pump which I believe is made in itally, Jebo is made in china.

Absolutely. I'm not very strict on my shop loyalty morals. The shop has to be something special to get my repeat business without me even looking at prices on the web or elsewhere. But the BYAP guys do such a good job of customer relations that I sometimes wish they were not on the other side of the country. I would be in there every other weekend!!!!

EDIT- no Rupe I'm not coming to see you every other weekend. You are still too far away :P. but what's the plan for summer stock? I'm thinking tandanus for my sumps/small tank and ~30-40 Murray cod for main tank (if i setup another GB or filter). P.M. Me when you have more info.

I wouldn;t think thats a good sign, dropping the warranty to 3 months? True there may be many reasons they have done it, but just makes alarm bells go off in my mind...

And yes, ebay shops are just no good for Aussie businesses that provide good service from a shop front, you can't compete on price and 99% of people chopping on ebay will go for lower price every time.

I thought the laws changed to guarantee 2 years statuary warranty. Or is it only in Vic?
