"Sleep, what you're imagining is probably a flycutting tile cutter."

Mine looks like yours except only one blade, used to use it in the drill press for cutting thin metal. Could see the advantage of two blades as the single ones are dangerous at speed and without being fixed. :)

That looks pretty handy!!!!!

I know in the Aquatic Eco systems catalog there are hole sizes listed for the different sizes of uniseals. Unfortunately they are in inches (well unfortunate for you, pretty simple for me, Luckily I have all the sizes for the ones I've used so far.)

Now that I've cut a hole in my Rubbermaid tote and built a Bell Siphon (I only hope it works :crosses fingers, eyes, and toes) I find this thread about a no-holes siphon, which would have worked great with my system's design!
Now that I drilled a hole for that siphon that was 1/4" too big, and I had to silicone the heck out of it so I don't have to worry about leaks, I find this thread and see a two-blade adjustable flycutter!
And now that I searched all over town for a "bulkhead fitting" I find this thread about something called Uniseals!

I must have been doing a "Rip Van Winkle" :bigsmurf: when I was perusing the posts for something to learn .......... Nice thread!  Sometimes it just doesn't pay to sit in the back row of the classroom ......

TCLynx, I don't know about your catalog for uniseals, but I was looking them up to see what they looked like and found this in Florida --

I just looked up Aquatic Ecosystems and their price is a whole lot better!

Reduce costs!

Why use an expensive bulkhead when you can use a Uniseal®? Just drill a hole in the pipe, tank or bucket, insert a Uniseal®, then put some Windex® on the end of the pipe and push it in. It's that easy! Feel like rubber, but they are made of DuPont Alcryn® rated to 40 psi and warranted for 25 years. They are immune to cold, will not harden and hold pressure and vacuum. The sizes below correspond to standard Schedule 40 PVC pipe. Fit tank wall thicknesses up to 1/2". Made in USA.

I know there were some questions about pressure, etc., so I quoted the sales nubbin.

Forget the link to the tank depot ..... unless someone wants to see a pic. but there is a much better one at the link above.

Ahh, then you have a true flycutter. they were designed for cutting sheetmetal.

Despite us quoting 25mm for pipe, it's still 1" pipe, or so close :-) 1" being 25.4mm
They kept most of the sizes and just renamed them.
All our threads are still in BSP too.

I have just purchased a 1500lt FT and a 1000lt sump tank, problem is there is only 50mm difference in height. I was going to elevate my FT and drill a hole to run an overflow into the sump but I think I'll try one of these no holes overflows first.

Reading through this thread there seems to be a quite few people who don't like the no holes system, it really doesn't look that complicated :? what has gone wrong to put people off using these?

no holes overflows all seem to get an air lock after a while and overflow at the worst time

I run 3 ibc/s 2 as fish tanks and 1 as a sump they are all the same height

File comment: These run cp and use 90 mm pipe

Yep, No Holes overflows and water bridges need very regular attention to get rid of air bubbles that form and will eventually stop them working until being re-primed.

I'm not using any no holes overflows anymore. I found that the air line check valves would fail eventually too and the thing that was supposed to make re-priming the no holes overflow would actually cause it it fail.

A whole saw isn't such a big investment. Just make sure to size the piping nice a big so you don't have to add more overflows to keep up with the pump flow and such.

Some failure points I've enjoyed:
1) these are always nearly-no-pressure, so solids build up and clog it and it overflows....very slowly: we came home from a long vacation to find lots of water stains in the kitchen from dribbling overflows. Solution: big pipes.
2) bubbles build up gradually and break the siphon resulting in a gradual waterfall in the kitchen. Solution: run a large pipe/bubble reservoir up from loop with a good shutoff at top (hose bib or whatever) so you can suck out air occasionally. One nice touch is to have a clear section of reservoir so one can see the air/water level.
3) once, when backwashing a drain line to clear some buildup, I apparently pushed air into the trap and a few minutes later noticed the sound of an impressive waterfall in the kitchen. Now I check the air trap each time.
4) fish pushed an airstone near the intake. Waterfall!
5) This is not strictly a no-holes problem, but if the solids-sucking intake clogs one will find a second intake above normal water level (same as in the SLO) to be a really, really good idea. This happens at least monthly in my SLO setup (falling leaves) and in the no-holes.

On the positive side, at least these setups seem to fail gradually unless one just dumps air into it. And there are times (temporary setups, etc) when one really does not want to drill a hole.

Have fun!

I have decided to "KISS", elevate the tank alittle and drill the hole!

Thanks.
