I planted some strawberries about 3 months ago. When planted, one plant already had flowers and produced a couple of fruit. Since then, I've had no flowers whatsoever. Now that it's getting cooler, I thought I would have seen more flowers by now, but none have appeared.

Does the same plant keep fruiting, or do you need to replant each season?

Depends on what cultivar you are growing. Lots of variations on when they fruit and how long the plants are productive. A good place to get info is the follwing:

hi im still growing and eating strawberries, you just dig a runner under the gravel and it will strike roots they just keep growing, i think my chooks are getting sick of them

Variety has a lot to do with it as to weather they are Day neutral (everbearing) or Day lengthening (spring until equinox). Temperatures also play a roll. Greenhouse operators often use lighting to trick strawberries into bearing longer.

yep, gotta pick the right variety for your locations and such. I think many strawberry growers do plant new plants each season and the plants often get some cool storage before being planted out at the appropriate time depending on the variety. Some types need a cool period followed by warming lengthening days to fruit while the ever bearing varieties I'm not quite sure what triggers fruiting in them.

Also make sure enough iron and potassium is available in the system as a deficiency in those can set them back.

I haven't had much luck with strawberries in my system yet but I'm still trying and my pH has only lately settled into a more neutral mature range. Strawberries tend to like things on the acid side in most situations.

imho, strawberries sucked
but then I left them for some reason. once established (12 months later) I'm getting heaps of strawbs, and now imho, they're great :-)
Also, I think the new plants from runners did better than the others.
Once they were flowing, I removed all plants that didn't flower... this seemed to increase yield, but that could have been weather related.
I bury every runner shot, and encourage it to grow. next season if it or it's parent doesn't flower, it goes to compost.

anyone know what makes strawberries taste like stink? I've got some in one growbed that are inedible, very dry (astringent) and bitter. taste more like medicine !

Are you sure they are not Indian (mock) strawberries? This plant looks remarkably like a strawberry plant but has yellow flowers and the strawberries are small, dry, and not particularly pleasant tasting.

I have just got my strawberry seeds out of the freezer to warm them for planting.

the Gardenate web site says to pick off the first flowers and harvest in 12 months, that's a long wait.

Probably why most people start with plants. I don't know about your location but usually you can buy them in the spring time here. You can get named varieties this way and if they are tissue cultured they should be virus free and have known qualities.

If you have a friend with some runners they are willing to part with you could also start from runners.

can anyone recommend a variety of strawberry that would be well suited for growing in a greenhouse in Perth?
