Hi everyone,

Relatively new to this AP game, and my partner and I are in Tom Price. Sourcing fingerlings was promising at first, thinking we could get them from Broome or Karratha, with no luck. So being a little impatient, we bought some online, from a Queensland business.

Now the problem is this...we got Jade Perch and as soon as I innocently mentioned this in another thread people seemed suspicious of them being in WA. So my question is this- Is it a big no no to have Jade perch in WA, and if so why? I tried to find info on the net before we ordered but couldn't find anything about them being a pest, not that we are going to let them go into steams or anything.

If this is a very bad thing I won't be buying them again. But where in north of WA can we get fingerlings???

Any feed back would be helpful.

Cheers
Indi

It's not really your fault, this is just how pathetic the whole fisheries system is....

Theoretically you are not allowed to bring any fish into the state without fisheries permission. However, It's on the onus of the buyer to sort out translocation permits and approvals rather than the seller. I guess in theory the seller should be asking the buyer about permits, but that's not likely to happen because then they don't make a sale. So the seller sticks his head in a proverbial bucket of sand and sells fish to whoever he wants without asking too many questions, lest he lose a sale..

It's a crazy situation and fisheries really need to make it the responsibility of the seller, not the innocent buyer who generally has no idea.....

Yep, and getting translocation approval would be a nightmare enough in itself.... getting a "health certificate" even more so.... especially with the cost...

You've got your fish... grow them, eat them... and say no more...

I couldnt agree more Joel and have even suggested this to fisheries but they didnt want to know about it. It seems changing any of the rules that were carved out in stone many years ago just isnt something they can be bothered doing.
I see nothing wrong with Jade Perch being in WA as they have many similar characteristics of Silver Perch so why let one into the state and not the other??
One thing I do know though is that there are plenty of them already here, last year when I was delivering Trout I saw Jades, Murray Cod and even Sleepy Cod in peoples systems all bought in from the eastern states and supposedly illegal to keep in WA.
Indi, the next closest hatchery to you I know of is Bealwood in Carnarvon. They do Barra and a few saltwater species.

Thanks for the replies guys,

Keeping them a little hush hush from now on, we only have 40 and won't be getting them again.

Thanks for the tip about the hatchery in Bealwood in Carnarvon, I will be looking them up soon.

Mean while I have my water test kit, so will be checking out all that jazz now.

Thanks again,

Indi
