We managed to get the first growbed planted out tonight (given its also the only GB with any media in it at the moment).

Its not obvious from the picture, but there are seedlings all through the middle of the GB (not just on the outside).

But I also had to take a little detour from getting the system finished as it would seem that our puppy has decided the GB is a good place to dig.

A few star pickets and some wire mesh later....

Looking good. How long did it take to fill your system with the spring water bottles. How many bottles did it take? Tap waters okay you know!!!

I realized the bottle was in the photo after I posted it, I wondered how long it would take for someone to comment on it....

The system was filled from the garden hose. The bottle is what I used to transfer water from my aquarium to the AP system (just to try to given the system initial cycling a boost along).


given those bottles hold 15L, and my system holds about 1600L........

I am partly through my first system and was wondering how to lift the grow beds up. Besser blocks look great. What sort of fish are you looking at putting in?

My original plan was to get some silver perch (given it was too late in the season for barramundi). But it seems to be difficult to source them in WA at the moment. So after some discussion over here, I'm probably going to get some goldfish / feeder fish until it cools down, and then get some trout.

So once again I find myself having to take a little detour. This time because most of my seedlings got vaporized with the heat over the last week or so.

So this time the mission was to build some shade. A quick trip to the big B and I found these garden arch's at a good price cause the boxes were water damaged.

A few cable ties and they were nice and secure.

Next some PVC pipe for support, and some 50% shade cloth over the top, and we have one functional shade house


After having it up for a couple of days the seedlings in the end bed still don't look too happy. But I suspect they are still getting too much sun from the open end. Probably just need to get some more shade cloth. The seedlings in the middle of the shade house look quite happy.

Is it easy to remove for access Sam? what if you seperated in the middle?
I like the arches, what are they made of?

It's not obvious from the photo's, but the sides are just hanging down, with the PVC pipe there just to add a bit of weight. So to get access, just lift the side up and put it on the top.

My plan was to separate the middle (the side PVC is already in 2 pieces), but as the urgency is off now (cause the shade is there) I just decided to leave it and think about it a bit more before I start cutting holes in the shade cloth.

The arch's are just some thin steel that has been spot welded and powder coated. Not the best quality (the fastening on one of them fell apart as I was assembling it. But nothing cable ties couldn't fix ), but they do for the job, and came at the right price.

Next mod - gun turrets and a water slide! Seriously I like the arches they should be pretty useful to support the plants so they can grow more vertical too. Everything in it place so far, what is the fish plan?
