Bring on the redclaw

I've decided to get some redclaw into my sump tank so today I drove to bcf and stumbled around the store trying to find some yabbie pots and finally realising there were out of stock "being a little dishartened I put back the rope I picked up and jumped back in the car, then I thought hmm just maybe kmart may have some so a bit of a drive around the car park and I stopped near kmart and went inside and with excitement I grabbed 3 pots but I had a hard time finding rope that wasn't going to cost me $15 for what I needed so jumped back in the car and drove back to bcf and picked up what I put back and payed $3 and I was on my way..

Destination Wivenhoe...

Seeing I sold my Kayak my favourite spots aren't excessible, but I had another spot in mind which only locals know about. So the plan is all set in motion and with a nice little drive out there and I set the traps ready to be collected tomorrow, only concerns are this weather us qlders have been having and thieves which wivenhoe is ripe with when it comes to yabbie traps.

Matty, are you just going up for the day, or are you going to camp it? i've been tempted to have a go at redclaw since I moved up here, but just never had the chance.

EB, Yea just a tad wet up here at the moment lol - 2 days off work already

Orcy, droped the pots out today and picking them up tomorrow morning sometime

before all the rain 14months or so ago then the floods, wivenhoe was useless for redclaw, I put it down to during the drought there was less water and still lots of catfish which probably ate plenty of them. But last time I went I caught a few not as much as you here coming out of summerset but cross fingers tomorrow will produce results. I just hope all the fresh hasn't cooled them down to much...

And Ahhhh SuperVeg ahhh No hahaha butter and garlic will be the go

Best bait for redclaw is lambs fry IMO. Cant beat it for any fresh water crustacean actually....oh dam Ive just given away my secret weapon - enjoy :thumbright:

I use chicken wings for yabby bait here. Liver gets cut up by the critters and bits float everywhere. Chicken wings stay in the net , dont get cut up, so the yabbies concentrate in your net. Cheap too

for murray crays, we always used liver, but put it in stockings so that it didnt get stolen during the night.

matty, interested in knowing how you go, I might have to make a trip.

I find sunlight soap works well and stays intact for ages but depends where you use it sometimes attracts catfish I do have admit I saw some honeydew growing on the bank which I had a few bites of then put the rest divided between the traps, I should have eaten it all!!!!

Orcy I'll make sure I take some photos tomorrow weither its a fail or a win

Redclaw love sweet potatoe and potatoes but really love mango

Liver used to be used and is used by most around here, but I have converted quite a few to chicken wings and they havent looked back. Try it in a couple of nets and see :wink:

Not entirely true Julia, redclaw are omnivores as are yabbies, gilgies, koonacs and marron. Omnivores eat a wide variety of organic matter. These species in their normal habitat actually take their nutritional value mostly from invertebrates which are normally found around pond/dam floors.
When kept as pets they prefer foods like shrimp pellets or various vegetables, but will also eat tropical fish food, regular fish food, algae wafers, and even small fish that can be captured by their claws. Their disposition towards eating almost anything will also cause them to explore the edibility of aquarium plants in a fish tank.

Redclaw farms usually use a supplementary pellet that contains a low-protein, high carbohydrate pellet diet in combination with organic matter. The organic matter stimulates productivity of the detrital food chain. The supplemental pellets are either ingested directly by the redclaw or are broken down by bacterial, fungal or protozoan decomposers and are subsequently consumed by other invertebrates. These larger invertebrates make up a substantial proportion of the diet of redclaw in ponds.

Thes guys are definately not vegetarians, it is a widely mis-interpreted misconception. Trust me, Ive been breeding yabbies for years and they are in exactly the same class. :thumbright:

But in regards to bait - yes you a correct, they do love the slightly boiled potato and also water melon skin is good too :headbang:

Earlyish departure around 7am and what a beautiful morning "Australia Day" Not one silly bugger on the road besides myself

Gotta love the scenic drive up there...

I decided to stop off and check out twin bridges a local swimming and fishing spot after hearing they opened the flood gates to bring wivenhoe back down to 75% capacity and well its not so recreational at the moment

This little pic of a picnic area is just around the corner on higher ground which got smashed this time last year...

After all the site seeing I arrived at my destination.

I pull up my pots and have a look inside the first pot and theres a couple in there.

After emptying all my pots I got a total of 8 yabbies mostly small but 2 of them were about 25cms.

And to finish it all off I droped into the fernvale butcher for some lamb
