Thats bizarre.
I have been keeping fish for years and never had a pump fail on me.

no matter how "good quality" something is, you are going to get early failures.
The better the quality, the less the failures and the longer average time before failure..
Maybe Troutman was just unlucky...

I've got a shed full of stuffed pumps, usually replace around 2 a year on average. I should point out though that i do currently have 18 pumps running at the moment!!

Hi guys. In the process of buying my first pump... Little giant 6-cia (45gpm)appeared and one from Harbor freight that should be moving less than 3000 gph as well. Do anybody knows about any of these ones? Anyways, I'll be reading a bit more on what's posted on this topic for now.... I could also go with a 1/2 hp Craftman model.

ok, after reading this topic thoroughly I think I answered my question. None of the above!!! Good thing I noticed today as I thought I was getting a bargain on the Little Giant (or should I say electric eater) this little Giant uses 720 watts :naughty: CRAZY
http://www.allpumpsdirect.com/11-specif ... mps-444-02

As for the one from Harbor Freight..... looks like a knock off of the ones recommended on later posts (the one from Rock around the Block and the Jebao Eco Tech Pond Pump EMP, but uses 175 watts and gives less gpm/h
http://www.harborfreight.com/submersibl ... 68418.html

Anyways, since I did my research on this two, and lost a couple hours gaining knowledge from from my crew (BYAP) thought at least give you all a heads up on what not to buy... and please correct me if I'm wrong with the numbers.

As for me, I will go to check all the Craftman and Simer models tomorow, with the specs of the 2 that you all spoke before in this topic (the one from Rock around the Block 1, and the Jebao Eco Tech Pond Pump) which are wining in the battle of the submersible pumps atm, and will let you know if I find something nice over there just to ask you if by any chance it is tried and true from anyone over here.

Thanks for all the advice, as always. Have a good 1,
Simply.

Two weeks ago blew a flap on a permanently on ACO-004 airpump.
With no spares to be found I made some from a Heavy Duty BBQ Hotplate Liner.

Materials: High quality fibreglass core coated with 8 layers of PTFE (Polyterafluuoethylene) for non stick surface
Dimensions: 400mm x 500mm
Usage: 180 – 300 times
Other: The Heavy Duty BBQ Hotplate liner is 50% thinker than the standard BBQ Hotplate Liner for up to 100 more uses

That roll is good for 80 flaps. Just wander how long this replacement will last.
The original was running for about six years.
I have the airbars hanging about half way down the FTs to reduce the back pressure.

Hey all,

I have read through the thread and it appears pump recommendations come based on each systems setup....So...

2 X 1000L IBC's (one for sump, one for fingerlings)
1 X 3000L Main Fish Tank
5 X Tilkey Tub 750L Grow Beds

Note that the IBCs (sump where pump is going) sits 1 meter below gorund level, and the grow beds 1 meter above ground level, so I will need a head of at least 2M (3M to be safe) if I understand correctly. I intend to to run it constantly, and want minimal power usage as I am going to convert this system to solar power in about a years time (if the pump lasts that long!).

So what do people recommend?

I found this pump after some research but I am unsure of their quality or durability:

Thanks

Adzza, head apparently is calculated from sump water level to the highest point. So you should only be looking at 1m to 1.2m of head if I understand the setup....

I thought head was calculated from the fitting point on the pump, at which point the pump essentially has no head resistance, and from that point onwards, head is accounted for.

If my understanding is correct, I need 3 meters to be comfortable.

Nup, taken from the water level rather than the level where the pump sits.. I guess because your only really pushing water above the water level against gravity.

Ok then so its 1.2m if being exact, or 2m to be safe.
