I couldn't help myself  after all the advice on here about "hold off feeding the new fish for a couple of days, even if they beg for it  "
Then Monya (he's supposed to be the responsible one you know  ) goes on about how much he fed his new perch and catfish (before they were even out of the box! ). So, this afternoon, some pinches of food went into the ibc for the babies to see how they were.... 2 pinches turned into 9 and they were still begging (ever see fish sitting up on their back fins, with their pectorals clasped together and the pleading look in their eyes? )
They might get some more food tomorrow

Having a 1000 litre tank will help you out. I would suggest you do tests though.

Here's some simple guidelines for testing your water the DIY way.

Is your water acid?

Take one drop and then put it on a small piece of blotting paper. Work paper in mouth till it is all ground up and swallow remnants. Wait one hour. If you suddenly find you love everything and feel the urge to paint a large mural on the side of your tank, which is subsequently rippling in and out of the light, your water is acid.

Is your water alkaline?

Get a tin can. Take the top off and empty contents. wash can. Drill small hole in centre of base of can and put a length of string through it. Secure string with knot. Secure loose end of string to anything in your water. Place open end of can to ear. If you hear drunks talking to each other about their problems the water is an alkaline.

Is your water hard?

Mount high diving board above your tank. Put on your togs* (swimming trunks/costume) and climb the diving board. Do a belly flop into your tank. Did it hurt? If it hurt your water is hard and you are soft. If it didn't hurt your water is soft and you are hard.

Testing for ammonia.

Get photo of BAQ moderator Monia. Check in tank, look under all large rocks, spawning mats etc in case he's hiding there.

Testing for nitrite.

Is there a well lit moon? Not raining? Mossies aren't swarming? You can enjoy the evening you've got the nitrite.

Testing for nitrate.

Go out in the evening and sell some fish. Did you charge more than in the day. You have a nitrate.

Testing for general hardness.

Look for a broken down cars in the yard, in particular Holdens. Check record collection for albums by AC/DC, Motorhead and anything pre-90's by Angry Anderson. Check wardrobe for higher than 90% black clothing.

All three of the above indicate general hardness.

Hey, just glad I can help!

* Note to Aussies. Speedos are not togs, they are a crime against humanity - but I still love the look of a man in one!.

Is that to test if your fish are spawning?
