Pumps - good ones and bad ones.

I think you perhaps need to do a little more planning if you want to run such a large system on solar. There are more efficient pumps than that one and every watt counts. You really need to account for every cm of head as well making the head as low as possible.

I have a similar setup. I have a old pond pump that was kicking around that does 5100 litres/hr (more than I need) but it uses 130 watts. I have been reading through a lot of posts and the pumps like the following are a fantastic replacement for mine and only using 40 watts. Similar models etc have come up on posts with positive feedback from what I have seen.

I will eventually have a 1250 gal ft with same amount of gravel gb and a multi-level DWT, nft going on, pump will be in a sump...

Will pump @ 2600 gal/hr @ 10' head. Sufficient for my intents.
Am looking at the high efficiency pumps for a later upgrade. Hopefully this will last until then.
Kind of apprehensive to get a quote to be honest.

I am in the United States, in case that matters, in a region with sustained freezes.

Not sure on US and freezing part. But for us Aussies Laguna pumps rock and have all the other attributes.

They are among the most energy efficient? pricey... but that's ok if you say it is great.

Relatively energy efficient compared to others. Just look at the wattage vs volume pumped, this will generally tell you if one is more efficient than another. You can get a Laguna with as little as 45watts. That's low compared to others of the same capacity.
