Am interested if anybody actually got prawns going in AP in the colder temps. Interested in trying something new.

Giant freshwater prawns... as in the Malaysian freshwater prawn... and similar related prawns found around the top end...

Require water temperatures of 25 degrees plus.... constantly..

They were going to have a crack at Australiense (which is not the warmer watered giant freshwater prawn), which, if I read this thread correctly, is native to the Murray system and thus should cope with cold temps (though I don't know about Canberra temps). Wondering if they'd managed to get it going.

Macrobrachium Rosenbergii...the giant freshwater prawn.... can grow to around 30cm....

Macrobrachium Australiense.... doesn't grow much bigger than a "normal" prawn... about 7cm...

Fresh water shrimp are found in the murray and the goulburn systems. I have seen them up to an inch or so but no bigger. Could be heading up the murray this weekend so might try and get some home.

Bumping a old thread but anyone have prawns in their system yet?

I have found the Murray freshwater shrimp do not survive for very long once removed from the water. Have tried to keep some alive while camping on the river to see if it would be worth trying to bring some home but they do not last very long.

I just came back from a mission to catch some redclaw crayfish (Cherax quadricarinatus), because I have heard they are pretty easy to breed in captivity.

Unfortunately I only managed to catch 3 cherabin (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) and a fourth one which is a lot smaller but could also be one.

I got told the problem catching redclaw crayfish is that they can exit the opera house trap when they are done feeding and the pots should be checked every 15 minutes. Sounds like I have to plan an overnighter...

an amateur in this field , I am more of a hobbyist , but would like to cultivate a few for family in a fish pond(that is convert a preassembled huge kids pool, I bought a few of these from and aquarium shop , quite pricy as you can expect , do you know who can sell me some postlarval stage for cultivation and breeding for a reasonable price , partcularly interested in Macrobrachium rosenbergi . Do they breed in a pond 122cm deep , 427 cm diameter swimming pool/pond.
do they need circulating water to breed , I am a natural person I donot like anything that is surgically altered/genetically altered , I prefer 100% organic for just my family , my concepts are more perma -culture oriented , eco balanced artificial pond (but as close to natural) with thriving surrounding vegie garden and orchard .
However seeing how things are done at aquaponics is opening new concepts and dimensions for me , but I am just beginning , budding from a hobbyist to a semi farmer and aquaculturist with some very basic concepts on nature.
I would appreciate some advice and guidance from more senior and experienced members.If someone could link me up with a shrimp /prawn larva supplier I would be much grateful . I am also interested in tropical small to semilarge fish .
