No it was a mouse, so entangled and strangled in the net I couldn't get it out. I put my boot on it and pulled up on the net, whence maggots flew out, hit my leg and fell into my boot. :puke: Jeez I got that boot off quick and shook it over the trout tank, till I remembered the reason I went to get the net was to harvest some trout, so I scooped them out and into the silvers tank. I think its called a comedy of errors.

Man, we get BORING things over here. Lizards and some tree frogs, and the occasional black, yellow, or red rat snake. Nothing like the variety you Aussie's have. Jealous. I wish I were a kid growing up over there. I used to catch and keep all kinds of reptiles and amphibians when I was growing up. I could have had quite a collection over there. I did see a coyote the other day out in the nursery, where new RAS is going. They're very skiddish, and quickly walk/run away when spotted. Is that one guy an ant eater?

How to die in Australia: try and keep the wildlife as pets.

I wouldn't keep a salt water croc Ron. I've kept venomous snakes here...they just have a lot more variety.

It is an Echidna. One of the Australian Mammals that lays eggs. They eat ants and termites mostly.

We have lots of little things that'll kill you before you notice it's there (apart from the drop bears, but most Aussies grow up aware of them, so avoid the trees), but nothing much that's really big. I saw a few videos of people being stalked by brown and black bears, that'd be worrying.

Full on Colum, we have the nasty snakes but I'm happy with that if it's the price of not having bears.
If a snake gets you, then you work out if it's worth trying to get to a hospital. If it's not, just find a shady tree to sit under and roll your last smoke. Maybe carve a note to family and friends on the tree "Burke and Wills" style.
If a bear goes you, you just watch it eat you. Yep, I'll take the deadly snakes over bears for sure.
Don't get me wrong, I've heard of crocs dragging people out of tents but generally they just want a hug.

Drop bears eh...sounds like when we send the rookie hunters Snipe hunting.lol We do have some bears in t up to his area, and a lady was mauled a while back, but generally not an issue. The grizzlies out West...whole different creature- a lot more attitude and 3-4x as big. I lived in Alaska for 8 years, and there you need to be aware of them when you're out in the bush. Not too many people up there go hiking/fishing without a sidearm, at least a .40 cal. My brother had one steal a salmon off his line once. he was trying to pull the fish away from the bear with his pole. My father realized what he was doing and yelled at him to "let the damn bear take the fish"! Good advice. They were a constant during the salmon run, but were usually content to steal a few fish. The sows with cubs and older males where the ones you had to watch out for. A lot like people.

Your thread reminded me of the great article on Australia from badassoftheweek.com (warning: extremely adult language at the link): http://badassoftheweek.com/index.cgi?id=943881018973

I know you Americans think that teasing you is a national sport for us but I really wish you would believe us when we are concerned for your safety.
