Hey guys,

I will be going back to Australia, and as an immigrant taking all your jobs :-).

Well, now I have got that of my chest, I would like to ask you seriously, what ute is alright?
I am looking in the 5k range, with does surprisingly offer a lot of choise, even If I look in the Brisbane - Toowoomba area.

As we don't have the range of utes in Germany you guys enjoy and we don't seem to have the same surdiness over here, I really dont know much about what I should do.
I would go straight for a Toyota LR or Hilux. If I could affort it, but the offers in my price range are rare. And those are kind of rotten.

So are there any alternatives I should have a look at and what do I need to ask for. As there any thing I should avoid at any cost?

My car I own here in Germany i a VW Golf IV build in 1999, so you see all my car knowlegde is from TopGear.

Hiya Perp, without knowing what you require a utility for, I think the tray back is the most common for transporting larger loads. If you're planning to become a bogan and do burnouts around thr streets then you'll be wanting a well body.
As for makes and models well that's all about personal choice and availability.
Due to the expected use and weight load it's my understanding that Utes are geared lower and therefore use more petrol.

I have a 2004 Holden Rodeo - Dual Cab, 3L Turbo Diesel, Well Body. I wish it was a tray back as I like to be able to just throw stuff in the back.

Being a dual cab the tray is a little small, but it does allow me to transport my family around.

I get about 9-10km per litre - city or highway.

Before this car, I purchased a Ford Courier with similar spec (but a 2.5L Turbo Diesel engine). I thought it was a bargain at $5k but within weeks of owning it I was pulling the engine out to do a rebuild. Watch out for bargains like this.

That's right, you should know what I need it for! I will be working on a farm in the Dalby area. I think that a ute might come in handy for all sorts of stuff.
I have seen quite a few Holden Commandore, but I think I might not have the coolness in me to own such a vehicle!

Thanks! I acctually had a look at the Holde Rodeo, I quite like it. I will make sure to do a test drive :-)

One thing I'd mention is that whatever you buy, being in the Dalby area, you want to make sure that it has a bullbar for when you hit a roo.
Four wheel drive would be the go too I'm sure, definitely want to avoid any lowered 2wd utes out bush.
Traditionally cheaper to buy in Brisbane than out bush but that might not always be true.

I heard of them, is it not common knoledge that they are as big as dingos and have long teeth?

Wow! Those drop-bears are even scarier when wet... yikes!





I had no idea! A roof-rack makes sense, but how do people just walking about deal with that? I doubt an umbrella would be much protection unless you've got them with spikes or something. Maybe a repellent? Hmmm... Could be a market for that.

In Costa Rica we just have to worry about Chupacabras:





But at least in the jungle you can always hear them crashing through the canopy because of their 5m+ wingspans. It is only out in the open where they are a real menace... Chupacabras are also one of the main reasons we tether our children.

Chupacabras look just as dangerous as the drop bears Sam. Here in Oz we aren't allowed to tether kids anymore so we use a different bait now.



Aww she'll be fine it's a percentage thing, there are far more humans than drop bears she would have more chance of being run over by a car. One of the reasons we have so many migrants is to increase said percentages.
