you should have seen them this afternoon, when we shifted the manky potato up to the maggotry  The poor little BSF's fell for their last swim......... BANG! These fish are sooo quick!

Who needs a ramp and a box? A couple of old spuds and a grill over the tank...

time for some owning up...

A couple of months ago our aerator got wet and karked it. We haven't been running a separate air source for about 3 months. The fish have been getting all their O2 from the sump pump (stirs up a jacuzzi)

Last night the water level in the system must have dropped just enough so that the float for the tank pump didn't start the cycle. This meant that the was no water flowing back into the tank to aerate the water.

We got up there this morning and the fish were all gulping at the surface  HSM

Started the tank pump, splashed a hose into the tank. And scooped out two dead Jades :( We also found four other fish that were suffering, so we put them in a mesh cage in the flow of the sump pump and blasted them with high O2 water. They have since recovered (:phew:)

I had to go to town today, so I bought a new air pump (had been waiting for a cheap/free one from a mate, still waiting). There are now two air discs running.

Now, the stats on the corpses... One Jade at 20cm long was 175g
. ... the other Jade at 17cm long was 100g

that's 75g difference in 3cm

These fish will be filleted and sampled soon.

They seem a more stockier fish than silvers in their conformation.

They sure are and as Jaymie said, the growth tends to be in width and depth rather than length as time goes on. Here are a couple of pics of some of mine that I took a while back HERE. Still haven't eaten any, but should do soon.

Alright, GORE ALERT, IF SQUEAMISH DON"T GO ANY FURTHER IN THIS POST!

Axl has filleted the fish, weighed the fillets = 90g from 275g of fish

The shoulders above the opercula (gill covers) are really meaty, and we were surprised at how much flesh there was on the bodies for small fish.

Because these fish weren't purged, the fillets are soaking in some salty water at the moment to clean them a bit.

Taste results later on :)

I see you left the gut intact. Good idea because when one of mine crapped itself during the weighing process I was stupid enough to smell it. Smelt as bad as chook shit.
