Hey South Aussies.

So I am still planning my system.

I have read that rainwater from galv & zincalume roofs shouldn't be used but is that true? If so what about mains water in SA ?
I was planning on the rainwater until I read not to.

Some local advise most welcome

Calling anyone in Adelaide/southern suburbs that has fish feed! I have, quite by accident, come into possession of 6 silver perch about 100ish mm long and I have no good! Wondering where people get theirs from or if anyone could spare a bit till I can get some? Let me know here or pm me...

just chiming in, currently underway constructing a new system with two ibc's in the ground with 4x beds and a few linked tubs.

have been researching what to do next, where to purchase supplies from etc..

hoping to get the system started by the end of the year

what is everyones plans for the summer season. I've harvested my first batch of trout and looking to replace, Barra seem out of the question till mid Jan and then I don't think the water temps will be hot enough for long enough to grow out to a decent size..

Ive got Murray Cod 12 big ones and 12 little ones , should get a few more soon .

In the large fish have 2 that are much bigger than the other 10 , they are in a separate tank added on the end of system , they are looking good for xmas / new year feast.

That frees up a spot for another batch of small ones

Once I rebuild my system , long term I would like to have 50 . I will need a few tanks in series to allow for grading as well as the main tank.

Graf you could build a a solar heater , wouldn't be hard here (in the riverland) to keep temps up for most of the time . Trouble is if we have a week of cool days and cold nights the water temperature can drop a lot .

I think to do the Trout / Barra system we would have to be set very up well do do it properly

(1) AP system with enough capacity so fish can be fed to appetite every day to really push them along

(2) A large capacity RAS system in a insulated shed so temperature can be controlled , so new fish (little ones) can be picked up early while big fish are finishing off in AP system . Gives maybe an extra 4 to 6 weeks grow time .

Ive seen a set up like this for trout / jade perch which temp wise might be easier than barra.

(3) Ability to provide Heating / cooling of AP system for short term use in the event of a cold snap or heatwave

Realistically not viable $$ wise but good fun , really not much different than having $$$$$ invested in a boat / fishing gear and rarely using them (me lately).

Hi Terra, yes more to look at. Want to look at a solar heating option with minimal capital cost that I can mount on the shed roof, thinking of something similar to a solar pool heating system, but then theirs the pumping/thermostat aspect to sort out. Barra fingerling supply @ ~140mm or so seems to be mid summer before they become available (as per Robarra and Mark Lee fish farms) and at a relatively smaller size (80-100mm), might need to do an indoor heated aquarium winter setup with smaller fish moving outside once the system warms up by the looks. lots more learning/thinking and playing around to be done.

Also looking at expansion and shading options to increase volume to help control water temp swings, so much that can be done.

For any in Adelaide, I've got a 20kg bag of skretting 7mm spectra FF floating pellets on its way to me, expecting early next week. I won't need it all for the remainder of the growing season so I'd be happy to split the cost if anyone is interested up to a max of 10kg. Otherwise I'll freeze down and use next season.
