my system has been running tickity boo, so happy.
Tuesday arvo I was doing a general cleanup and water check, PH was a little high 7.9 so a splash of hydroclauric acid in one sump and off I go.

Wednesday early I head out of town on business for 4 days only to get a ph call that all 60+ goldfish are dead, floating. :upset: :upset: :upset: :upset:

wife did another test and all appears normal, but of course it cant be.

just a massive RANT until I get home and see whats going on. I did ask for 2 litres of water to be saved so I can test it myself.

There were no power cuts nothing unusal happened as far as I know, only thing different that I can think of is,...I usually put the acid into second sump then it should mix and flow between the 2 before being pumped into FT.

This time I added acid into first tank and maybe it was too concentrated and not swirlled around enough.

Bugger!
I feel your pain Tonzz.
Yep, sounds to like acid too concentrated before dispersing (or maybe neighbours spraying weeds? Weather has been too stable for much else).

Oh dear dead fish are no fun

I lost all of mine once from chemical (insecticide ) spray drift

I did a 100% clean out and ran on a few yabbies and a bucket full of tadpoles to get started again

ouch Tonzz, looks like a significant and rapid pH swing did them in :(. still at least they weren't edibles that you had been growing up.

yeag rapid PH change downwards ....as i mentioned put the acid into wrong sump, i may have also done it twice... theres a bit of family trauma going on, i am trying to mediate....

until I get water stabilised, what should I be adding for plants?
obviously nothing with wetter soil additives

Probably just a source of slow release nitrogen (your system may already have enough nutrients in it to last awhile). Whatever you use you want to try avoiding an ammonia spike as you're re-establishing your fish. I know blood and bone sprinkled on the grow beds works for this but other things will work as well.

thanks Scotty,

Yeah its what can I do about detergent scum in/on water and what will bring PH & ammonia down.
after 18 months with this system it was finally going gangbusters, hopefully I can keep the plants going.
