We've been doing some pruning over the last couple of weeks (it's taken that long) so Axl can plant some new varieties of tomatoes in the big growbed. He's put in Money maker, Mortgage lifter and Black Krim. The "plan" is to try to keep the tomatoes over on one side of the bed so they don't smother everything else, like the parsley (we found so many of them while we were pruning!)

After the visit from the permie group, one of their members has sent me out a box of plants to try out: Galangal; taro; ceylonese spinach; sweet leaf; costa rican leafy greens; water chestnuts.

All the lettuce and cabbage varieties have run to seed, been collected, and the plants have gone to the chooks.

I also pruned the rosella bushes and picked a bowlful of fruit. A friend is making a lovely couli from it

can you describe the flavour and use of rosellas? and how they grow?

umm, tart, umm, people make jam from them, umm, no they are not parrots , apparently a native.

They are related to hibiscus, so they have a spreading bush form. This pic kinda shows the form. These ones I bought as seedlings in August. The bushes are about 70cm tall and at least the same across. The fruit could probably wait for a bit longer for best jam making.

Jaymie tell me about the taro, can you put up a pic. I have some, not sure if it is edible and how to prepare it? I'll geta pic of mine.

I haven't taken a pic of this new one, but I'm pretty sure it is edible.

Taro is a staple food for most Pacific Islanders.... similar in use to the "Yam" as a staple starch..... but not related

Maori used "kumera" a sweet potato, which is actually more related to a Yam....

Yams are commonly eaten throughout Africa "true yams", whereas many of the yams eaten these days in the US are actually sweet potatoes

This is the new aerator, we'll install it some time over the weekend (silly season has started).

This type are used to aerate septic systems and run 19mm hoses at 81L/min
