Hi all,
The first year of running my system has gone off with out a hitch (well, relatively speaking), however just recently I've had high Ammonia and nitrites readings, normally these have been zero. Further more I've noticed this foam/bubbles forming in the moving bed bio-filter (see photos) and sump tank. Not sure if the foam and high Ammonia/nitrites are related. I've just been trying to stop feeding and do small water changes to keep the levels down. Anyone had any similar issues?

oily scum and foam can often be a sign of protein, fats and amino acids etc from the fish.
Can sometimes come from the food. Scum/oil etc is not unusual esp. in high stocking.

various people around here have discussed and used skimmer box type solutions to take it off.
Not sure how they separate it after that. Try the search.

re: ammonia/nitrates - that is simply a sign that your biofilter cannot cope.
As fish get larger etc the load increases.

summarise your system volumes, #fish, #beds & vol, setup etc
will be easier for people to comment further..

May the fish sh*t and the plants grow.....
